I resisted buying this because I had maps and a GPS and it didn't look that interesting. I used another book to plot out the highlights that I wanted to see enroute, but I totally relied on this book to actually keep me on the highway.

We have just reached Santa Monica having started 14 days ago in Chicago and this book was our bible. It was so EZ to follow, gave great tips and was witty to boot. I also had a kindle book Travel Route 66 by Jim Hinckley which provided some background and history on the places we saw. I would recommend both. Excellent turn by turn directions. Any uneasiness felt about taking this trip going this year have been erased by reading this. Used for a trip was great help. Great information, a little hard to read at first because of the way the book is formatted. The author has done his research firsthand and fills in all kinds of places to see and do.
My only wish might be for him to add GPS coordinates- but part of the fun is finding sights yourself. Own this book, and get the 4th edition. And make sure you visit his store in Chandler, Oklahoma! Nicely organized into manageable map sections. Good focus on route options and directions.
Brief but reasonably thorough coverage of points of interest in a spiral bound format is perfect for road use. Seems essential for a 66 trip.
